I have the same problem (using the same compass) due to the B&C Alternator. I have pinned it down to the B&C by pulling circuit breakers. Unfortunately B&C says "yeah, some of them will do that". That was pretty disappointing. I have ordered some magnetic field blocking material (MU metal didn't touch it), and will let you know the results.
