Once I tightened the engine mount bolts, I installed
(approximately 25) 3/16" aluminum pop rivets around the perimeter of
the firewall, spaced about 2" apart and 1/2" from the outside edge. It
looks nice and serves to keep the outside edge secured down. It was easy
to space them uniformly. You just drill the first one at the bottom,
then use a small piece of cardboard to mark for the next and then drill
it. Then, use the same piece of cardboard to mark for the third one,
gauged from the second, etc.-all the way around. I used a small
aluminum washer under each pop rivet. The SS will pucker just a little
under each rivet head, but it actually looks OK. Of course, this will
more or less permanently attach the SS/Fiberfrax to the firewall (you
could still remove it by drilling off the rivet heads) but why would you
ever have to remove it anyway? In five years, I haven't. You can then
RTV a nice bead around the outside edge of the SS to seal out oil,
moisture, dirt, etc.
