The real story of my Sun-n-Fun race,
We flew from Las Vegas to Sun-n-Fun without a problem in 7 hours flying
time for 2100 miles. First mistake, I should have checked the tension of the
belt. We installed a new one before the cross country and new belts do need a
re tension after about 5 to 10 hours. I was too busy showing off our system
that we forgot to do that very important check. We started the race 6th and I
quickly saw the "RED HAZE " of competition. We went to 44.5 in of MAP and
2900 RPM right from take off. We were indicating 280 kts before the mid point
of the first leg and went by the number 5 plane by at least 80 KTS. We then
started to smell burnt rubber, belt slip, as I said, I saw the "RED HAZE" and
told my co-pilot Dennis not to worry and kept going. As we entered turn one
at 300 KTS on our GPS the belt broke. Big suprise. If I had run at 38 in.
MAP and 2800 RPM as we planned the belt would probably" stayed on. If I had
pulled back the power when we smelled the belt we would have been OK. But,
NO!!!!!! I have seen the "RED HAZE of competition and it had me. Per the
instructions of the race promoters, when you have a problem pull up and call
mayday and deal with your problem or find a place to land. Following
instructions I pulled up to 1,800 ft and prepared to call a mayday, looked at
my co-pilot and said we really do not have a big problem so I shoved the
throttle to WOT, 27.9 in and 2,900 RPM, re entered the race course and
finished in fourth place officially. While this was not the result I wanted
it proved that our system failure is just, GO TO NORMAL IO -550 performance
and finish the flight. That night we replaced the belt and flew the next day
in a photo session with Sport Aviation Magazine.
If any one is interested in the flight data we gathered going to and from
Sun-n-Fun I will have it available in a few days after I rest from the trip.
