There is indeed a correlation between cost and quality, but it is not the only factor. Is a Lincoln that costs more than a Lexus any better quality. I believe it is not. But is a Lexus that costs more than Yugo better quality. Here I would guess that it is. You need to look at who is selling or proposing a solution and how they are achieving the lower price. The credibility of the messenger is paramount. Which leads your next point... >We'd all have to throw out lots of equipment and stop listening >to people like Bob Nucholls, Bob Archer and Brent Regan when >they say they think they have a better and less expensive idea >for wiring, for antennas or for batteries. Would you listen as intently to a person of unknown repute when they tell you that you can wire your starter using 28 gauge wire because the starter's average current consumption is minuscule. They are right in their statement. If you average the current consumed by the starter during a 1 hour flight, you would find it to be well under 1 amp. What this revolutionary is missing is that wire gauge needs to be based on instantaneous current not average current. So much of the revolutionary leading edge technology is based on similar analysis. The designs are often done by individuals that lack the big picture and insight into the real working environment of the products. Look at the credibility of the source and the reasonableness of the arguments and then make a decision. And remember the golden principle: If it sounds too good to be true, it most probably is.
