During this maneuver, pull the mixture
towards idle cutoff. If the backfiring
goes away and the engine keeps running
the engine is set too rich at idle.
I suspect you are too rich.
This is a problem that should be
corrected ASAP. Extended idle at too
rich a misture can cause the engine
to not respond to throttle inputs (quit).
