Gary: Despite the hazardous building and cleaning materials and extensive
use of hand tools, etc., that we Lancair builders use in the building
process, over the past eleven years, I have heard of just one Lancair
builder suffering a "catastrophic" loss of airplane, materials and/or
personal liability in the building process. Minor dollar losses have
occurred for sure but only one catastrophic loss that might have warranted
builder's insurance. (A professional aircraft painter was struck and
seriously injured by a propeller some years ago as reported in the "Lancair
Network News".) Insurance losses for Lancairs that are most frequently seen
and are so prodigiously expensive are the "in flight" losses which argue for
flight liability and perhaps hull insurance after the building process is
substantially finished.
So, on my next airplane (probably in my next life) I will not use builders
insurance opting instead for extreme vigil to avoid any need of insurance.
I know that others have opinions on this issue and we shall certainly hear
from those having strong opinions. Greg Nelson
