I'll second this. I did not have the harrowing experience that Michael Fopp
had, but I did notice oil seeping from the strut (up near the Schraeder
valve) after a few years. I had also trailered the airplane for 1500 miles
-- sitting on a snowmobile trailer but snugged down onto the gear and tires,
so it took a fair amount of abuse. I sent it back to Vern for overhaul and
he said that there had been some internal damage (a slightly bent rod -- the
details I don't recall). He couldn't say whether the damage was pre-existing
or caused by the trailering, though he suspected it might not have been
caused by the trailer.
Anyway, the cost was modest. I'll probably send it back again prior to
flight since it now seems to have a very slight leak similar to the one you
described but not as bad, and it will have been trailered even more
(California to Colorado, next month) and at that time I'll probably have the
self-centering mod done.
Like Dr Fopp says, better safe than sorry. And while it may not cause a
problem in its present state, it certainly won't cure itself.
Good luck. It sounds like you're getting close.
