>>>I had a rather high pitched
whine in response, and couldn't understand much of what ATC was saying. I
was 50 miles out from the tower and about 5,000 AGL. I had to turn the
volume WAY up and then I was able to just barely comprehend them over the
high pitch noise. The signal got much clearer after a) I got closer and b)
I was out of the clouds for about 10 minutes.<<<
Matt,
I had the same problem last weekend. I flew my first hard IMC and could
barely hear approach control. As soon as I popped out of the clouds
underneath the overcast, I could hear approach again. This, of course,
happens at the worst time ... when your being vectored for the final
approach.
I have my COM antenna buried in the vertical tail per the plans. I'm
wondering if a separate, external COM antenna will be required.
I also noted that the airplane apparently slows down in the visible moisture.
It feels similar to hitting a large puddle of water on the road with
your car. The airframe also makes some unusual sounds, although very
faint, flying through the clouds.
Finally, on an unrelated note, my Ameri-King encoder, the very cheapest
of all encoders, is working unsatisfactory for IFR flight. I'm holding
exactly 8000 feet indicated on my altitude from Atlanta to Orlando and Center
is all over me for my altitude varying between 7700 and 8000 feet.
This is unacceptable especially during this current time of heightened
security, Center is watching everything very closely. I have the
encoder mounted under the pilots seat which may be a little drafty. I'll
try relocating it up in the dash area if I can possible find a place
to mount it among all of the wires, hoses, and other shtuff.
