Matt, I have the very same problem, I have my transponder antenna located
behind the co-pilot's seat.  Every time they tell me they are not reading, I
try turning slightly and they are usually able to pick me up.  I am somewhat
concerned, but then I will go for a while with no problems.  It would be
nice to have a method to test the signal strength all around the airplane,
