What kind of regulator are you using? If it is a mechanical relay type then
you are probably seeing point arcing from the field relay. There are two
fixes; put a larger condenser across the points or replace the regulator
with a solid state one. I would highly recommend the B&C regulator as mine
has given me 6 years with 0 problems.
