I had the same problem on my IVP. The answer lied in the teflon runner
attached to the gear door on which the gear travel during retraction thereby
forcing open the door.
These runners are specified per the factory to be 1/8" in diameter but in
practice a 1/4" piece is far more robust. You mention that on the ground
retraction tests showed no problem. The answer to this problem lies in the
fact that during flight the air load on the gear doors when retraction takes
place at 140 KIAS is demanding on the teflon runners and they tend to warp
over time. I would expect that if you inspect these runners you will find a
1/4" indentation or more in the runner about 3 in from the front which is
caused by the initial impact of the gear when retraction starts. This causes
a hang up in the retraction process which winds up placing your gear in the
30% down position.
In my case what I did was remove the factory supplied runners and replace
then with 1/4" which solved the problem.
Good luck and I agree with you the IVP flies like a sofa bed with its gear
down!!!
