Do you really expect a modern engine to be the same as 1930's technology? The real answer on the fuel selector and pumps is simply upstream vs. downstream pumps. The prototypical Factory style has the wings feeding the selector in a draw-thru style with a single firewall pump. Apparently this has the propensity to drw air into the system at the selector. The Eagle approach has each wing independently pressure feeding the selector. (Two pumps and filters, two switches. Some are mounting in the wing roots, I am mounting under the toe board.) A few builders are using a three pump system with fail-safe bypasses. If a wing pump fails, the fuel in that wing can be drawn thru the selector by a firewall pump and pump bypass plumbing with appropriate check valves. If I have a failure, I'm putting it on the ground to repair. Also, the plumbing is already cramped, so I am not bothering with the bypasses.
