I think most of the light wt. starters have a heavy duty solenoid that
throws the pinion into the ring gear and then makes the electrical contact
for the starter motor. This is good because you don't get the grinding of
the turning pinion on the ring gear as you did with the old Bendix drives.
You do
not need a separate solenoid IF YOUR WIRING AND STARTER SWITCH ARE OF
ADEQUATE CAPACITY. These solenoids pull about 10 amps and require at least
18 ga wire. The contacts in the mag switches, that have a start position,
are not rated to carry this amperage. If you intend to use the START switch,
on the mag switch, and the existing wiring you should go to a normal
solenoid and then to the heavy solenoid that is part of the lt. WT. starter.
I use the starter from a 77 Honda
Accord which is similar to some of the Sky-Tech starters and I had  starter
switch points weld together, which burnt up the starter and scarred up the
ring gear some. The only indication of the problem was I showed a heavy
discharge on my amp meter and my voltage showed 14.1. When I landed and shut
down with mixture the engine kept turning over.
