Siince no one more knowlegeable responded here's what I've been told by people at Lancair. When I asked there had been five fatal accidents: one involved a nose tire and wheel that caught fire on an airplane that had no firewall gear shield; another involved low manuevering in Mexico and potentially out of w&b; another involved an iced up intake opening on the old style cowl in heavy snow in Idaho; another was during the first test flight where the pilot was flying out of a short field; and the other in the hills of n. Ca. cause unknown mabe stall/spin. The most recent two in Albuquerque and Kissimmee have been discussed here. This is an unpleasant subject which none of us like to discuss. I think we all worry a bit to some degree at some level. But there are obvious lessons to be learned. One is: We have very sophisticated airplanes which need to flown with great respect and discipline. These crashes remind me of that. I've tried to look at every one to figure out what discipline or proceedure I need to adopt to reduce the risk of a similar mishap. We don't seem to have any basic design problems. We seem to have what every other model of airplane has: pilot error.
