A less-rare configuration of the front-mount-governor 360 configuration is
the IO-360-C1E6, from the left wing of a Seneca-1. It is a fuel-injected 200
HP (angle-valve), counterweighted-crankshaft configuration (6th and 8th order
absorbers) which weighs 337 lbs. dry (according to Lycoming data). Since it
already has the Bendix injection system on it (as well as the equal-length
tuned intake tubes), the expense of adding an aftermarket injection system
can be avoided. (The right wing has a counterrotating LIO-360-C1E6.)
The Airflow Performance injection system (which we use on our V8) is an
improved copy of the Bendix (you can even use AFP parts in Bendix systems on
non-certificated aircraft). The brain at AFP (Don Rivera) was some form of
high technical wizard at Bendix before starting AFP, so is VERY knowledgeable
about repairs of Bendix components.
There are two things to be aware of with front-governor 360 engines: (1) they
use a different camshaft that all other 360's. It is forged with the blank
for the gov drive gear inyegral with the cam blank, and is rather rare. I
know of only one place to get them (That DOESN''T mean there aren't others),
and they are expensive and not always available; (2) since the torsional
content of the drive at the front of the cam is greater than on the accessory
case, it is advisable to use a governor with the torsional-absorber in the
flywieght drive plate. If you need details, I can supply the Woodward part
numbers and a shop (certified) which will do the conversion.
