I would suggest a minimum 3 inch spacing (I used 1.5 inches) on the top and bottom splice and a smaller spacing on the lower aft cowling-fuselage side and use two screws and nutplates at the lower end to reduce vibration stress and fatigue on the lower hinge ends. I also added additional bids on the top and lower halves of the cowling to provide additional strength to the hinge area and build sufficient depth for alignment and mating of the two hinge halves. In regards to engines. I have the short mounts and searched for a left front prop governer 360. the O-360F1A6 has that configuration and is counterweighted thus runs smoother. Thus you do not have to dish out the firewall and it is cleaner on the aft side. There is a rear intake on the motor but I purchased an IO320B1A sump and had Lycon in Visalia CA modify it for forward feed and installed An airflow performance fuel injection system. Sump and mod was $800 more and the fuel injection complete with boost pump plumbing complete was $1800. These mods were suggested by Don Goetz and I am glad I followed his advice. The motor is rare but worth the wait and search. That configuration boosts manifold pressure 2 inches on the test stand (according to the shop owner) above the bendix fuel injection system plus I get 1.4 inches more ram air as compared to alternate air. The counterweighted motor is about 8 lbs heavier.
