Awhile back, there was a long LML "thread" containing many posts regarding
the epoxy pump and the Jeffco epoxy systems. I don't have the time to
research the archives right now, but I seem to recall that the darkening
could be due to "aging" and/or the absorption of moisture (change in
characteristics when exposed to air, etc.). Please don't take my word for
it, but I think the consensus was that this wouldn't have a detrimental
impact on bond strength if the system was still within the "shelf life" of
the system. I have performed lay-ups with the darkened epoxy mixture and
the "flash time" and apparent strength characteristics seemed identical to
the day I opened the bottles - but please, check for yourself.
On a similar note, I have chosen the "slow-setting" Jeffco epoxy system for
the Legacy. It mixes at the same ratio as the standard system, so those
"standard ratio" epoxy pumps (like the one I own) will still work with this
system. This system supposedly provides for a 30 minute "pot life" versus
20 minutes for the standard system. In the hot climate here in the South,
the longer "flash" times will certainly be beneficial, especially for those
multi-bid bonds. However, the downside of this system is that it is HAZMAT
and, as such, will result in higher shipping costs and be a bit more
"noxious" to work with.
