The calibration of the fuel tank gages is one of the final steps every builder must accomplish. This calibration is done be adding a small known amount (usually 2 gal). Then disconnecting the outlet of the gascolator and, using high pump until the FIRST bubble shows up. The Added minus the drained is the unusable (level attitude). We do this for each tank. Then we add 2 gal (E.I.) (or other known amount VM) and read the capactance on the gage to do the calibration.
Standard procedure. Then drain all out into 55 gal drum.
The process I used required draining the fuel out of the one wing to do the opposite, that way when finished I would have each tank at 1/2 for the test flight. Yes, I ran each fuel tank (at different times) to 1 gal indicated and engine sputtered exactly at 0, (3000 ft over airport). And yes, I believe (and hope) most people would do this. Fuel gages are a FAR 91.205 Required Instrument.
