I ran both of my wing tanks dry going to Joliet this last weekend. When filled they took 16.5 in the left and 15.5 in the right. In the past I have put a total of 41 gals in all 3 tanks. I have also verified that my VM 800 Totalizer is accurate to within .2 gal on fillups. This should be verified after every fillup. I watch the Totalizer in combination with the GPS to make sure that I have 45 minutes of planned fuel left on landing. As a cross check, I start looking for an airport to refuel at when both wing tanks are empty.
I too like the header tank concept. I have always felt more comfortable when the plane has had more than 2 tanks( LNC2 = 3 tanks, Commanche = 4 tanks and C340 = 7 tanks).
The discussion also confirms my decision to build my LNC2 with the header
tank and sight gauge. What could possibly be more simple and consequently
more trouble free?....I think the answer to that is....nothing.
