Hi gang:
A couple of points on fuel tank vents and quantity on the IV.
Just before closing out the wing, put a length of 1/4" Nylaflow tubing
through the filler cap hole into and through the outer-top vent hole in the
front D-section. Pull it out the next day after all that was to drip down has
done so. You are then sure that the hole is open.
I have the original tanks, not extended and the SkySports fuel gauges. I did
a few calibration runs to set the empty and full indications on the gauges.
Empty is easily done before any fueling, using the setscrew at the base of
the sender. Note the fuel truck's quantities as you fill up and watch your
gauge. When you fill up full during your test program, calibrate the full
mark; you will most likely need to reset the empty afterwards too. When your
tanks are both less than 1/2, transfer one into the other to have an empty
one, reset the zero on that one and then final calibrate the empty tank as
you fill it up again from the truck. Repeat a few times and the full and
empty will be set. To empty a tank, I use a 5 gal, pail with a Facet 12 v.
pump and tubing to transfer into the other tank. I emptied from the sump
drain into the bucket (use a piece of alum. tubing, a hose clamp and a small
rod to prop the drain open, fuel runs down the tubing into the pail).
As I go from empty to full, my quantities are 0=0 1/4=6gal 1/2=15gal
3/4=28gal F=43gal. Another way to look at it is that 1/4 tank increments are
6 - 9 - 13 - 15, empty to full.
Therefore, the gauges are not linear! Never take off with 1/2 or less gauge
fuel. Never go into the last 1/4, which is unusable, even with the inner bay
flappers. Know thy gauges. Use a fuel flowmeter and totalizer. Recalibrate if
in doubt.
