Well Eric, I take your answer to my challenge to be a resounding NO. Smart
man. However, it hasn't humbled you or cured you of writing whatever
lengthy bs strikes your fancy on the Lancair List. So why don't we go
back to your assertions, one by one, and figure out where the truth really
lies.
1. EngineAir Power System's gearbox development is just reinventing the
wheel since the technology has been around since World War II.
I think Jack Kane did a very nice job of outlining the engineering involved
in gearboxes whereas all you could do is make assumptions about something
you know nothing about.
2. The EngineAir engine is no better than a Continental.
Using Orin Riddell's own data, if you think 20-21 gallons per hour versus
15-16 gallons per hour at 65% power, 33% increase in aircraft range, low
maintenance costs over the life of the engine and an overhaul price of 8K
versus 25K is no better, you better have your calculator serviced.
3. In cross country race after race, the factory EngineAir has performed
with a few percent of many Lancair IV's equipped with TSIO-550's.
Eric, Eric, Eric. You know very well that the factory EngineAir plane has
been a real competitor in the races it has run in. In last year's race, of
which only the short leg was run, Orin Riddell commented that he could not
believe how fast Jim Rahm was going. And while you assert that the Venture
was flying with a kid doing the navigating and that this affected the
course, Jim chose to fly alone and as everyone knows got himself lost,
yelled at by Chicago Center and lost fifteen minutes while still finishing
within minutes of the Lancair plane. I wonder why the Lancair plane will
not be racing again in this year's race.....
5. A real race is around the pylons at Reno.
Jeez Eric, most of us fly our Lancairs long distances and at altitude, not
around pylons in our backyard. I suspect most people are interested in real
life performance, rather than the "burn your engine up in one race" at Reno.
That said, Dave Morss has approached us on more than one occasion to put a
plane up for him to fly at Reno. Why? Because he knows that he had to go
through several Continentals at last year's Reno just to win and that our
engine would be a real contender, and more reliable.
5. Doug Pohl is just another "rich" guy with money to burn.
Poor Eric, barely scraping together enough money to build his plane. Show
me someone who flies high performance aircraft and I'll show you a "rich"
man. By the way Eric, I am just finishing my Lancair IV after ten years of
building it myself. Guess I should have taken all my money and thrown it at
someone to build my plane for me....
You and I could keep taking shots at each other and our mutual companies
forever. As a compromise, why don't you concentrate on your company and
we'll concentrate on ours and we'll see who finishes first on the way to
Oshkosh.
Doug Pohl
