Attn. George Braly,
George, I have been following your comments on the Lancair List. I have a
Legacy under way and have been gathering information on engine choices for
the past year, one thing is for sure, I plan to put GAMI Injectors on, so
you will get some business out of me.
Lancair will be supplying engine mounts, exhaust, cowlings, etc.. for
Continental's IO550N (310 hp) and Lycoming's IO540V4A5 (260 hp) so I want to
stay with a similar engine to simplify things.
We have all heard of problems with the Continentals: cylinders, cranks,
cases, etc. and the assurances that "that's all behind us now".
Lycoming on the other hand, especially the old style narrow deck, straight
valve versions of the 540 enjoy a great reputation for making TBO without
major trauma. Even when bumped to 300 or more hp with higher compression
and flow balanced porting. I am told they are not as smooth as a Cont. or
as fuel efficient, but they are lighter weight and RELIABLE. I would prefer
around 300 hp just so the 550 guys will not have bragging rights.
Electronic Ignition seems to be the way to go for improved economy and
performance at 8000 ft and above. Turbos are said to reduce TBO,
reliability and only make sense if most flights are 10,000 ft plus.
OK, that's what I think I know. Quite a few of us will be making this
decision in the coming months. What would you tell us?
