Sorry guys, but gut feel often ain't worth cr** when it comes to engineering
principles. The Teflon/stainless hinge pin kit supplied by Gary Hall works
just fine for extended periods of time. I installed his kit some 300 hours
ago on almost all my hinges including the inner gear doors (I deferred on
the flap hinges because they weren't wearing appreciably and because of the
difficulty of getting at them - I'm lazy, I guess) and can't discern any
subsequent wear or growing slop in the hinge.

It's obvious that the wear seen in numerous Lancair hinges is caused by
vibration and the original configuration of metal-to-metal contact in the
hinge loops. The Teflon/SS hinge pin fits tightly in the loops eliminating
this wear mode and the pin material sees just about all it's load in shear
at the loop edges which says that the aluminum loops will probably fail
before the pin material.

I won't bother to do the calculations but MY gut feel is that if you had
Mighty Joe Young pull on the elevators, He'd probably pull the hinges out of
the structure before the pin material failed.

Gary Hall's hinge kit works just fine, and I speak from experience.
