   Lancair CLAIMS you can build a Legacy in 500 hours.  Fact is, it'll take
more than that just to do a good job on the body work.  They also claim a
fast build ES can be done in 1300-1500 hours.  That's laughable.  I'm at
over 2400 hours now (and that's building with a builder assist shop) and I'd
estimate I'm only about 60% done.  We're doing the body work as we go, so
that adds a lot of time.
   I've long had a beef about the wildly optimistic completion times Lancair
claims.  Lance says that they're possible IF you do the workshops, buy all
fast build options, (including firewall forward), pay someone else to build
your panel, wire the plane, and do the body work, interior and paint, none
of which they include in the build times.  I think their figures also assume
you already have some experience building composite planes.  Fact is, most
of their customers don't have any experience, but they're still told the
same estimate.  I think it's a shame a company with such high quality
products feels it necessary to paint such a rosy picture of build times.
Maybe that's why there are so many unfinished kits out there for sale or
rotting in garages and hangars.
   If there's anyone who claims to be able to build a quality Legacy in 500
hours, I'd like to see their plane when it's finished.
