Hi Folks
Back home in NC after 2000 mile rotary round trip to Louisiana, Shady
Bend Florida, a RV flyin at Lakeland (where almost 10% of the powerplants
were rotory) and finaly home. Disappointed I did not get a chance to stop
by Charlie and Tupper England - we tried hard but weather and time just
wouldn't cooperate. Perhaps next time Charlie, I really want to see an
airpatch with such a colorful name.
Did encounter some icing, lost my communications antenna, had to replace
it and the alternator belt, but other than that an uneventful trip. RON
north of Atlanta due to ice on the first day, next morning was clear and
cold. Got 5800 static rpm on run up and expected it to drop to 5200-5400
when prop unstalled and was pleasantly surprised when the rpm simply stayed
at 5800 during take off roll and climbout. That Rotary really likes cold
air.
Tracy and Laura were super hosts as always and a lot of good vibes and
converstation were had by all. Met the new life in their household - a
young feline lady by name of Swiffer - some gal, what a tail!. Flew down to
the Lakeland Florida RV flyin with Tracy and his brother Barry. Finn Lassen
showed up in his immuculate RV-3, and George Graham and his wife, Fran, flew
in in his rotary powered E Racer. We had 4 rotary power aircraft there out
of around 50 aircraft. So a respectible showing.
Tracy and Finn flew back to Shady Bend in formation (I had arrived about 30
minutes ahead of them) and it was great to hear two rotary coming in the
distance with a quasi synronization sound beating between the two engines.
They made a low pass and pitchout and it was great seeing.
For you interested in performance, I averaged 170 MPH TAS at 6.5-7 GPH
burn rate at 7500 MSL from Louisiana to Florida (about 660 miles). This is
the longest unrefueled leg I have flow to date and had approx 7 gallons
left.
Now to catch up on some rest
