Without that, they would have no chance of in-flight trouble shooting. What to do if an injector clogs? What to do if a coil fails? and so on. Having extra mixture range is a feature, not a liability. Say your fuel pump goes weak or filter starts clogging, pressure regulator goes bad or fuel pressure otherwise starts dropping. Having to rely on a gut reaction of blindly turning the knob all rich without listening to the engine would disqualify the pilot from flying that airplane. Having said all that, should be no harm in experimenting with Mode 2. You can always reset it: If you have an EM3 engine monitor, you can check the setting of this parameter on the engine info page by holding the Acknowledge button (button 4)  and then pressing UP (button 1).  The dynamic range parameter is the 6th (next to last)  number on line 4.  The value is displayed in hexadecimal format. Resetting Injection dynamic range  to factory default setting 1. Turn the EC3 power off. 2. Select mode 2 on the Mode Select switch. 3. Press and hold the Program Store switch. 4. While holding down the Program Store switch, turn on the power switch to the EC3. 5. Keep holding the Program Store switch for about 1 second and then release it. 6. ... will now be restored to factory settings and you can begin programming after starting the engine. 7. Return the Mode Select switch to 0. Check your EC2 manual.
