When changing gears in a Hewland transmission we used gasoline on a rag to wipe off the Blue Hylomar used to seal the rear cover on the trans. Good against hot gear oil. Gasoline, not so much. A little goes a long way so don’t over fill. Any squeeze out on the exterior will also be on the inside. It will harden into a solid ring and looks really strange the first time you dissemble.
