Hi Andrew,
I think you are making the right move by self insuring.  I do carry liability just in case some gust of wind somehow blows me into something really expensive, but even if my aircraft is damaged, I am the one who is probably going to have to do the repairs anyway.

After you get a number of flight hours under the cowl, I suspect that you will become insurable if you desire.  So don't worry about it for now.

Hi Neil

The QBE quote 101140 clearly states "Declined to quote for Flight cover due to automotive engine (Mazda 13b renesis)- ground/taxi risk only
** Cover subject to ongoing SAAA membership**"

Seems like its a SAAA condition. Strange, as SAAA is supposed to encourage experimental amateur built aircraft.

Does not really concern me now, I really like my engine and wont be put off flying it, as such I am quite prepared to self insure.
As a SAAA member I really do struggle to understand why they endorse QBE. Is it just for the commission kickback from the planes with "real" engines?

Andrew,  Followed up on your insurance worry and QBE want some details as they do not see a real problem other than loading the risk whatever that is.  I have contact details for you from QBE, so if you can give me say a phone number and where you are I will ring and pass on.  Thanks neil
