What was holding the buckets up, and did the 2nd bucket get heavier? The column of water going to the ground isn't holding the bucket up, it is only holding the water directly above it.  The bottom and sides of the bucket is actually holding up the rest of the fuel.

Actually, the rest of the feul will exert some extra force on the column, but it requires calculus to figure it out and it won't be much.
