It would appear that my
best choice for the money is a 86-87 FI engine from from an
automatic RX7.  Finding that combination has been ... an
*interesting* excercise, so I'm trying to sort out reasonable
alternatives.

I have to agree that you should probably skip the '85 12A engine that you're looking at.  As you mentioned, the best find would be a good 2nd gen with an automatic transmission, but I wouldn't make that the only thing I looked for.  Finding a good engine is already enough of a challenge, without adding the condition of being a rare (mercifully) automatic.  The flex plate and counterweight are not all that expensive, so I wouldn't pass up a good engine in a manual transmission car.
