No question, Tom, if you can't get rid of the
waste heat - then you don't really have a usable HP number.
I've seen more than one time an individual successfully
tweaking his engine and getting more HP only to find out that more HP = more
waste heat to get rid of and then encountering cooling problems.
My cooling system initially had more margin
- however, the more HP I got out of my engine the more narrow
that margin became. Now at WOT at altitude - the oil/coolant temps
stablize around 190F -195F just 10-5 deg below my redline. So that tells
me if I get even slightly more HP, I'll probably run out of cooling
capacity. But, then for the reason your cited $$ - I seldom ever run WOT
other than take off. At take off on a hot day, I run a cooling deficit
until airspeed hits 120MPH IAS. Yes, I could eliminate that, but then the
surplus cooling capacity would translate into additional weight and cooling drag
for the rest of the flight - so I accept this situation (but, keep a close
eyeball on it during take off).

Ed: I am planning on similar HP for my Super charged 3 rotor
Questair Venture Project with a Rotrex Supercharger. I have a cooling system
worked out that (hopefully) will over cool this engine/oil/ PSRU/Intercooler
initially. I think it will be easier and safer to try get rid of cooling and
warm the engine up then chance over heating it. What good is HP you cannot cool
enough to use. This seems to be the problem with most of these designs. And for
that matter Homebuilts in general. I built a Lancair 360 many years back that
had overheating problems that I finally decided to get it cooled to the point of
using WOT anytime for as long asI wanted to throw 100 dollar out the tailpipes.
It worked with the help of some plenum magic I learned from people much smarter
than me.

Anyone know whose project this is. Looks like it could be
a good buy for someone.
