I am guessing the broken side seal

Did you happen to find any hint of what is causing your side sealing problems?  You are just having all kinds of weird problems and I still think there is some deeper flaw.

Bad/bent apex seals and one broken side seal. The apex seals explain the low compression, hard start and rough low power (the roughness had been developing). The side seal explain the oil smoke coming out onto the prop I think.

Now I need to find the courage to start testing at higher power.

Chris,

That's great news after all the setbacks.  What all did you find wrong with your engine?

Got my engine buttoned up and installed back on the Velocity.  Fired it up yesterday and it started up easily but was serging a bit. Came back out today, reset everything to factory and she is starting easy as pie and running smooth as silk. (until I screw something else up).

She is currently running as well as she ever has. Starting has always been a problem but is doing so great right now. As a matter of fact I feel kinda giddy shutting her down and the immediately starting her again just cuz I can.

I am keeping her below about 4500 rpm (I need to run just under 4500 to get the map to 22 to set Mode 3) to allow the new apex seals time to set. Reset the Hobbs too.

I replaced the 3 lb wastegate spring with the weakest one I have; a 1.5 lb spring.

So, should I be offended that someone else found a failure mode with a clogged exhaust??? I was beginning to think I had a monopoly. I will gladly pass the torch.

Keeping thing slow...
