I haven't run my engine yet, but when I crank it over, the starter gear remains extended after I stop.  is it the torque of the engine running that pushes it back, or do I have a clearance problem?   with Tracy's plate, I seem to remember that there is only one way to install it, no adjustments.
in writing this it reminded me that the new starter wouldn't engage at first.  I took it to the auto parts store, they tested it, and no problems.  I reinstalled it and it engaged.  maybe the solenoid isn't consistent.   comments?

ps - thanks Lynn for the idea of using a compressed air gun to prime the oil pump.   just filled the line to the oil radiator, then forced it all back into the block.
