I believe their there to make the exhaust
quieter, something to do with breaking up the shock wave. They also may be
restrictive.

Has anyone ever explained the reasoning for the odd "D" shape
of the stock "Cosmo" 20B/13B rotor
housing exhaust inserts ??.....................Inquiring minds want to
know !!..................

I may end up with a turbo, but I'm hoping the tangential muffler will

Its a Turbonetics T04 turbo, and yes, it works quite well. Also
has a few other side benefits. :)
Of course, building the airplane out
of foam and fiberglass rather than metal helps deaden the vibrations
too.
