I actually tried the in-the-ear type headphones with my iPhone. I bought a set of Shure in-the-ear headphones and replaced the foam inserts with the ones that Clarity Aloft brags about. They worked so well that if I was in the car, I couldn't hear anything from outside - not a good thing in a car. However, I found that the foam plugs really irritated my ear canal after a couple of inserts and removals. I have really small ear canals, and the plugs (even the small ones) may be too big.
I realize that many people use these things, so my experience is unique to me, but it has made the decision for me that a really good ANR is my choice. It has come down to either the Bose or the Zulu, and I'm leaning toward the Zulu. The Zulu fits my head better as it completely surrounds the ear lobe.
Best Regards,
Steve Thomas

My experience with the ear buds is they work their way out of the ear canal over time. Also, I find that they become more and more uncomfortable the longer you wear them. Maybe I didn't have the correct size foam? YMMV
