All Rotary
Flyers,
I
have had several inquiries about my plane/hobby. I am currently
constructing a Vans RV-10 utilizing a Mazda 20B. I have not posted much
since I have spent the majority of my time working on the plane and
deploying. I have been working on it for approximately 3.5 yrs, during
this time I have had three kids expecting my fourth and been deployed for
half of the time. I am currently a Coast Guard Helo pilot specialized
in Counter Drug operations. If anyone wants more information about this
issue just let me know. To date I have stopped several go fast vessels
seizing over $70 Million worth of drugs, needless to say I am very busy with
my day job.
Now to my night
job. I have been constructing my RV-10 in my garage. I have the wings,
tail, fuselage complete. The wings are currently located in a 14’
utility trailer next to my house. I have the Engine mounted and working on
placing all the amenities on it. Attached is a picture of my engine
mount. Many have seen it posted, it is the S-Beam, MODIFIED. I did not
feel comfortable with just having just a small tab on the oil pan supporting
all the twisting moments of the engine, so I had Ed Klepeis modify it for me.
Also, the 1/8” aluminum oil pan in my opinion was not beefy enough to
make me feel safe, so I had a 3/8” Aluminum plate mount over the top of
it to provide more support. 2 years ago there was no one manufacturing
the engine mounts for a 20B on a RV-10. Now Ed has all the dimension making
it easier for others to find a mount. The original engine mount would
have probably worked fine, but as the operator and owner I did not get that
warm and fuzzy so I decided to beef it up. Now I feel more comfortable. I
currently have an overall length of 53” from the firewall to the prop
hub vise 39” of the typical Lycoming. This should help on the
CG. I have been very cognizant of the weight of all the components that
I have been placing in the engine compartment and panel. I have a Sam James
Holy Cowl and he was able to lengthen it for me.
While I
wait for the products to arrive, I have been working on the wiring. I
plan to run a dual rear mounted battery electrical system. I am trying
to make the system as simple and easy as possible. I plan to run one
battery directly to the essential bus which will have the EM3, EC3 and all
essential items for flight and it will be connected to the main bus via a
crossfeed contactor. Wiring is still in progress.
My plan is to
have it running the first of the year, but I am getting ready to head out
again, so we will see. The wife also told me that I would have to have it
completed by March since the new unplanned addition is due in April. We
will see how things go.
If there are any
questions or suggestions please let me know.
