Kevin,
The -6A I used to fly had shimmy to varying
degrees in all 3 legs at times. If I was careful about tire pressures and nose
gear adjustment it would be OK. On the RV-4 (6 flights now), my first 5 flights
all had some amount of shimmy. After adding the stiffeners I finally had a
landing with no shimmy. We'll see how it fares after I've gotten a bunch more
flights on it, but right now I'm satisfied that this problem is
solved.
I'm curious as to why you had to keep "fixing" the
fiberglass fairings? Never had any issues with them on my 6A.

I removed the fiberglass leg fairings last
year [tired of fixing them] and made a new set of 2 piece aluminum ones,
just like van had in his plans originally. at the same time I removed
the wood gear stiffeners. I see no difference and have no problem with
shimmy. the nose gear has the capability to scare the hell out of you
shimmying, but that 's because of low tire pressure or bell washer
tension. just my observations kevin rv-6a [1000+
