Something to keep in mind but doubtful. The battery was freshly charged when I got into this mess, and I verified spark while cranking which means the EC2 was working. But I will make sure to keep the battery topped off.

What is your battery voltage during cranking? The EC-2 needs 9v or so to work. This has bitten me a time or two in the past. There's enough voltage to turn the starter, but not enough to fire the coils/plugs. Just a thought.
