As some of you may remember, I sometimes would have the engine quit after pulling back on the power while crossing midfield coming in a full speed from the beach to land at Clearwater airpark. I never really did figure out why. I did have the advantage of clear fuel lines in the cockpit and could see air bubbles in them. I had two 4-6 psi Facet pumps. Three Mikuni carbs set-up. Tried various things like enlarging the outlet from the fuel tank in the cockpit (fuel gravity fed down to the pumps), bigger fuel lines, etc. Always flew on low octane autogas. Never did test for alcohol in the gas. This was back in 2000 - 2004. Never consistently reproduceable failures.
There were some comments from people saying that that's why some airplanes (and cars) have the pumps submerged in the fuel tanks -- less chance of vapor lock.

Oly Olson responded to my e mail and provided the following information which is all he has at this point. So thought I would share it with you. It occurred to that possible fuel vapors, don’t know what the temps were but see Oly wearing a jacket in the videos, it probably was not that hot – and I also know Oly has a 6 psi pump which would tend to prevent that – no float bowl in the Ellison either for fuel to heat up in. Hope he finds the answer.
Ed,
Just a quick note, haven't got much news at this point. The engine quit on downwind for no apparent reason. When I got it back to the hangar today I was able to turn the prop and felt like it had normal compression. I got the cowlings off & it looks like all the fuel lines were intact, no oil lines broken, no leaks etc. The fuel tank stayed together and still has fuel. I will investigate further and as soon as I now something definite I'll touch base again.
