He could not reach your e mail, so am forwarding his reply to you. Ed From: Bill Repucci [mailto:bill@repucci.com] Sent: Friday, December 19, 2008 1:35 PM To: 'Ed Anderson'; 'flyrotary@lancaironline.net' Subject: RE: [FlyRotary] RV 9 Engine Mount Ed & Bob, Yes, the -9's engine mount is different than the rest. The reason is all in the wing. Van had to raise the AoA to fully stall the wing when on all three wheels. Also, the -7's intersection fairings won't work because of the angle at which the gear leg exists the fuselage. All very much a pain for the few of us -9 builders. I suspect they are all the same for the -7A & -9A's. As for why Van's doesn't include the dimensions on the plans. Well, they don't include most of the dimensions on the new plans as there is no way to build these new kits from scratch as you could the -3,4, & 6. Most builders simply buy the engine mount from Van's, jig it up, cut, and weld the sections they need to hold their alternative engine in place. It is a bit of an expensive way to go but it will guarantee everything lines up. One other thing, Van's makes two different length engine mounts for the -9. Mine has a full 12" between the firewall and the engine, whereas the common mount is only 10" long. This is required for the lighter engines O-235 and O-290 (in my case), the O-320's use the shorter mount. Radomir was able to find the web site for the fabricator that Van's uses but I had no luck and have sent him a note. Bob, you might have better luck than me. If you locate them, they might be able to weld up a custom mount at a reasonable price. I do know they have done things like made custom gear legs for a friend's -9 in Alaska. (He wanted to use 6" wheels rather the stock 5" wheels.) Best of luck with your project. Seems strange that Van would keep it a secret when its all over the plans for my RV-6A. But, then perhaps their motor mount vendor wished it kept that way to prevent competition. The main problem here is I don't have the caster and camber angle for the gear leg socket. Vans keeps these measurements classified. They did tell me that the Gear leg intersection fairings for the RV-7 would not fit the RV-9 because the angles were different so that would lead me to believe that the RV-7 and RV-9 use different engine mounts even though the fuselage is basically the same. There are not many RV-9 being built, and none with a Rotary that I know of. Would anyone in the group happen to know these angles or knows of someone that does, besides Vans?
