Not an original idea on my part, that's the way Mazda does it. They just happen to use that path to do other functions as well (manifold heating, throttle body heating, etc). This port is high and at higher pressure than the waterpump housing outlet so it is ideal for air venting. It may help if you understand that the waterpump housing outlet is NOT the outlet of the water pump. Study the engine and pump a bit if this doesn't make sense to you. I've been following this stuff for years and THIS is the first time that I can recall that point being made.. I always figured the expansion tank took off from the filler neck or the radiator..
