Not only does it have some additional features, but Tracy has told me they intend to stop producing the old EC2. They will still support it, but all new productions will be the EC3. Also as Bob mentioned, I think not having one 37 pin connector but two smaller connectors is an installation advantage myself. Either one will do fine on a Renesis but might as well go with the future.
