I don't know, but strongly suspect, that the hp numbers are quoted at the rear wheels. I agree that it's unlikely anyone pulled their engine to dyno it. The 3rd gen is rated at 255 HP, which is at the flywheel, with all accessories operating I believe. Typically, stock engines run in the 220 HP range on a chassis dyno, which is what you'd expect. Certainly, Mazda wouldn't have reduced their published numbers, unless the engine really didn't produce as much as expected in stock form. Still, anything in the low to mid 200's is smokin' in NA trim.
