No. A switching regulator will work just fine.
When the switching regulator cuts the generators circuit, the generator stops pushing electrons around. It becomes just some magnets spinning around a roll of copper. No heat is generated, because no electrons are moved around, and it doesn't eat any horsepower from the engine.
