understand that. The
protection of the wire should be near the source, not at the far end.

True story, Al. Any part of a circuit that is between the battery and
the fuse is NOT protected by the fuse, and also puts the battery at
risk from a dead short.
Look in the new cars; the high-amp fuses are in the engine compartment
right next to the battery, so that there is as little risk as possible
that the feed will short out. (Okay, and so they don't take up
passenger compartment space, too.)
