Definitely not the norm but timing is
everything. The key factors in saving the engine in the event of coolant
circulation loss is:
1. Recognizing the event immediately and
reducing power to the minimum needed to limp to landing
(Instrument w/ alarms helps a lot)
2. Getting the engine on the ground and shut
down before the remaining coolant boils away. The overheat
goes from "hot engine" to "rebuild time" very quickly after total
coolant loss.
The
total elapsed time between overheat alarm to engine shutdown was
about 4-5 minutes in my case.
