Yes, and coke and naval jelly and vinegar, and phosphoric acid, and lye.  All these things work, but are either nasty or attack the base metal or are marginally effective or take too long.

They fall under the "neat" column

The battery charger is in the "holy crap why didn't somebody tell me" column
