I always install when possible the filter / water separator before the pump and at the lowest point possible. On my CZ I used Perma-Cool metal fuel filter / water separator with a drain below tank level and it works very well. Replaced the petcock with aircraft type drain. the thread is the same. Take look at it:

It has large capacity and will capture larger pieces and almost a qt of water before it fills up.
