Yes indeed he did. When I beefed mine up I try to make it so it could fold without breaking the side channels so the cabin would remain intact.

Is there any chance the gear box was DESIGNED to fail in a severe impact dissipating some the the energy. It may have prevented prevented worse injury. If this is true it is great design work by Jim Bede. Jerry

I just tested the durability of the BD style gear made from 7075
aluminum. After ripping them completely off the landing gear box, they
are in perfect condition.
