Is there any chance the gear box was DESIGNED to fail in a severe impact dissipating some the the energy.  It may have prevented prevented worse injury.  If this is true it is great design work by Jim Bede.   Jerry

I just tested the durability of the BD style gear made from 7075
aluminum.  After ripping them completely off the landing gear box, they
are in perfect condition.
